Healthy Foods for the Barbeque


Summer can be a challenging time to stay on track with your supportive food choices.  I suggest making something to take to a party that you can enjoy.  It doesn’t feel good to be isolated in your food choices.  So with these, you are able to indulge, feel connected to community and join the party.

Egg Salad

It’s my midwest upbringing, I’m sure, but I honestly L-O-V-E egg salad and deviled eggs.    Serving egg salad with cucumber slices or on celery sticks is a big hit at any summer event.  I like to make it with Greek yogurt as an alternative to mayo, but there are organic low-sugar mayo options on store shelves now too.  Or consider whipping up your own in the blender with eggs, lemon and salt.

Hummus Crudite

This is a great snack to bring because people love to munch on the veggie and having a healthy alternative to ranch or other sugar-loaded dips makes for the perfect BBQ platter.  Simply combine rinsed and drained canned chickpeas, black beans or white beans with a squeeze of lemon juice, tahini, garlic, salt and pepper in a food processor until smooth.

Caprese Salad

A very healthy side dish that includes low-fat mozzarella and tomatoes drizzled with olive oil and balsamic vinegar.  Tomatoes are super healthy and in season this time of year.  They contain the antioxidant lycopene which is related to healthy skin and promoting youthful appearance.


Summer BBQ’s  typically have plenty of snacks and side dishes.  Bring these to give you a healthy protein option. They are easy to make, take a short time to cook and by bringing a healthy protein, you are guaranteed to have something you like to eat.  As always, use organic chicken or beef and organic veggies.
